The Role We are Seeking
We are seeking a Civil Engineer PE to lead the completion of various technical engineering tasks including Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), Erosion and Sediment Control Plans (ESCP), associated National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) for construction stormwater permit applications, design of stormwater management facilities and other related tasks. Additional tasks may include but not be limited to preparing zoning plans, grading plans, coordinating geotechnical evaluations, preparing traffic control plans and associated permit applications, Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, roadway designs and assisting other staff with their work activities.
The successful candidate will need to be focused on completing tasks in a timely manner, a good communicator, well organized, and hard working. Must be able to work well independently and with others. Must be able to use AutoDesk Civil 3D and other required engineering software and Microsoft Office software.
Compensation and Benefits
The pay range for this position will start between $60-90K annually depending on qualifications and work availability (for instance if you work reduced hours of 30 hours per week to maintain work-life balance, you would be paid less than someone that works 40 hours per week).

Location. Work from anywhere in the region as long as travel to the DC area is reasonable and you have access to high-speed internet. We don’t have a physical office location currently and use a cloud IT infrastructure.

You will be provided with a smartphone and a laptop for work use. Reasonable personal use is allowed on the devices as long as it adheres to applicable laws and standards.

90-120 hours PTO annually (Vacation and Sick are combined. Depends on the number of hours you are available to work weekly) to start and additional unpaid time off can be approved by the President on a case-by-case basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Ability to design in AutoCAD Civil 3D will be required as we do not yet have CAD design staff.
-
Ability to apply civil engineering principles to complete computations, technical reports, and drawings related to erosion and sediment control plans, stormwater management plans, zoning plans, grading plans, traffic control plans, geotechnical investigations and application to designs, and other civil engineering tasks.

Ability to work independently
-
Knowledge of codes and standards applicable to design of linear projects.

Preparation of associated calculations, reports and spreadsheets.

Mentor and provide oversight to less experienced staff.

Complete inspections and field work.
-
Conduct research in support of engineering documents.

Involved in identifying staffing needs and hiring additional staff as needed to support clients.

Some travel is required. Although you will not need to live in MD, most initial projects likely will be in MD in the DC area. Occasional travel to this area may be required to support projects if you do not live in the area. Other projects may be located in VA, PA and WV and involve travel as well. You may also be required to attend conferences outside of the region.
Skills & Abilities:

Strong knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.).

Preferred Skills & Abilities:

Prior work experience with a civil/land development engineering company utilizing AutoCAD design and stormwater management modeling software.

Ability to prepare Erosion and Sediment Control Plans and Stormwater Management Plans for linear utility projects, with a focus on pipelines.
-
Ability to prepare Construction Alignment Sheets for linear projects.
-
Prepare applications for Traffic Control Plans, Special Utility Permits, Highway Occupancy Permits, Driveway Permits, and various other local, county, and state permits.

Ability to design horizontal directional drill for pipelines under roads and environmental features including pipe stress calculations.
Qualifications & Experience:
-
BS Degree in Civil Engineering or related field required. MS Degree preferred.

PE required.
-
Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience, or a combination of advanced degree in Civil Engineering and 3 years of experience.

Professional Engineer certification in one or more of the following states: MD, PA, WV, MD, and/or VA. Multiple states are preferred.

Able to use AutoCAD Civil3D

Excellent communication skills, works well with others, and positive attitude

Must be able to collect field data such as stream channel dimensions, sight distance, and other measurements in the field, including during inclement weather conditions.

As a small company, staff often have to assist other professionals. This provides opportunities to gain an understanding the related activities required for overall planning of our client’s projects. Must be willing and able to assist Biology, Archaeology, and Survey professionals in field studies including civil surveys; stakeouts; wetland delineation and stream identification; archaeological field investigations; rare, threatened, and endangered species surveys; and other duties as assigned.
